How Red Cat Blue Cat came to be

This post is to document the ridiculously long process that my first ever picture book 'Red Cat Blue Cat' went through- from conception to completion.

The project started on my MA course in Autumn 2010, when I set myself the project of 'Cautionary Tales'. I did several wordless short stories, including a flying fish who eats a boy's belongings and gets the boy into a huge amount of trouble with his parents. I also came up with the idea of a boy who eats ink cartridges which turns him black/blue. He eats lots of white things to try to soak up the ink, which works except that the white things get bigger and bigger and so ridiculous. He dies from eating a whole polar bear.

Then there was the tale of Red Cat White Mouse. Red Cat catches White Mouse. White Mouse plays dead until Red Cat's attention is elsewhere- and then eats Red Cat whole.

I enjoyed playing with the macabre ideas of things eating each other, making them more visually effective by using colour. Then on a train one day (where I did a lot of my thinking) I came up with Red Cat wanting to be like Blue Cat, and Blue Cat wanting to be like Red Cat. They tried to change colour by eating things, and the things became bigger and more and more ridiculous until Red Cat eats a blue whale and Blue Cat eats a red bus, which obviously makes them very sick. I ran with this idea into my final MA project, as it just stuck with me for some reason- the colours, the strangeness... I enjoyed playing with it. This story went through a LOT of different forms, and two large sketch books, where I was just playing with different concepts and having fun with cat-shaped characters. I did a lot of exploration of the shapes and movements of cats, and then really looked at the relationship between Red Cat Blue Cat, exploring issues of love and friendship.

The photo at the top of the page is at a crit at uni (part-time MA in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art). We had a wonderful and very inspiring class, even though it could only be one day a week! Below is the desk I worked at in my bedroom in Brighton.

After using the story concept as a medium in which to explore my work and look at different 'styles' and techniques, I then used collage, acrylic paint, pencil crayon and ink to create my final 32 page picture book. I 'tamed' the story to become less macabre and more sympathetic towards the cat's feelings and their relationship. Below are a few final spreads that I used for the final book.

After the MA, when the book was finished, I liked bits of the artwork but wasn't happy with the outcome at all, and felt very frustrated by it. I felt I had been a bit too 'careful' with it and the cat's personalities were lost. I'd only just started to get to grips with creating artwork that I was happy with, and that the story was also not quite to my liking. So I drew the whole story out again fresh in pencil, changed the ending, and re-worked a lot of the pages. During this time I also signed up with The Bright Agency. They sent the new rough sketches off to Blue Apple and the lovely Kirsten from Bright got me a two book deal before I'd even properly signed with the agency. I was absolutely over the moon. Below is a picture of Brighton where I was living at the time, and the new studio I'd just moved into.

I then spent the summer working with Blue Apple (via email) on improving the sketches and the story. I worked initially out of a large sketch book, scanning bits that I liked into the computer, and printing them out in better layouts. I would then stick each page layout on the wall (in the right order) with masking tape or washi tape so I could see clearly how the story was working and what needed changing. (This is the way I work with coloured spreads too).

During this time, I moved to London, gave up my part-time office job, and got a new studio space. Below are some of the spaces I worked in over the summer- (I seem to have an obsession with taking pictures of my workspaces...) Also featured are Kinga and Fisher, my parent's cat and dog- my muses.

After a few months and once all the roughs were done and approved (making the book significantly longer) I then did the final colour in about a month or so. The cover was the hardest, as it was the first one I had to do and I felt enormous pressure about it not just being a student project but a real-life one for a proper publisher. The whole thing was incredibly exciting and incredibly stressful. I'd worked with Red Cat and Blue Cat for so long by this point that they had sort of become parts me, like best friends, and I was incredibly fond of them both, and could draw them both totally from my head. I spent a LOT of time on my own with them and did start to wonder whether I was turning slightly mad.

Above is my new studio space that I share with lots of other artists under a railway arch. Everything rattles when a train goes over the bridge. There is a cinema attached to the studios which we sometimes go to after work, which is fantastic. Here is the (final-ish) artwork for the cover- I can't believe it's actually finished. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to show the final artwork, so I'll keep it a secret for the moment. I'm just waiting for the final proofs, and it seems that my lifelong dream of becoming an illustrator has suddenly become true.

Now it's January and amid a million new resolutions for 2012 it's back to work in a big way.. some very tight deadlines this month! ...in the studio for my new flap book 'The Emperor's New Clothes' with the South Korean publishers Blue Rabbit. I absolutely love this story so am so excited to be illustrating it! I feel honoured to be working with South Korea as I think they produce such beautiful and interesting picture books. I am at the pencil roughs stage, and am scribbling each page layout out and sticking them on the wall as I work...which is starting to become slightly chaotic. Blue Rabbit amazingly have supplied me with a whole rough dummy book to work from, complete with flaps, and it's so beautiful!! I'm going to treasure it forever!

I'm so excited today as I've just had my first day in my new studio in Loughborough Junction London- http://www.whirledart.co.uk/studios It's set inside two railway arches- one of the arches also acts as a independent cinema/bar/balcony/photography studio space, and the arch where I am is a great open-plan space. I had my last day at my part-time 2-day-a-week office job last week, so today has officially been my first ever day as a fully full-time functioning professional colour-in-ner, and my first day without a very steady income to get me through the dodgy financial lows of freelancing. This is a pretty daunting prospect, but I am ready for it... even if it means living on tesco value white bread and baked beans for a while....

My good friends Caro and Simon are getting married this summer and I was so priviledged to be asked to do their wedding invites. The design was very much a joint effort (Caro is a very talented wedding photographer with a great eye for detail!!) and I'm really pleased with how they came out! I've just moved into my first ever studio for the next 2 months before moving to London and am loving it! It's a great feeling to get on my bike in the morning, stuffing everything into my basket and cycling for 5 minutes to 'the office', and to then have so much more of a sense of home once I'm back again in the evening. I share with 5 brilliant artists, sculptors and illustrators and we're open at Crescent Studios every weekend of May for the duration of Brighton Festival- come visit!

The Affordable Art Fair

The seagulls shout a LOT and a baby one fell off the roof yesterday -a bird man had to come round with it in a towel and push it back on again through my bedroom window... it had a really massive spiky beak.

Furless Wigs Exhibition
